INDANCITY

INDANCITY- SMU Contemporary Dance, was started by Dan Kwoh and ten founding members in 2006 as a platform for students, alumni and guest choreographers to perform and showcase their choreography. The group strives to influence dance in Singapore through diverse contemporary works.

INDANCITY has matured significantly in the dance arena since its inception. The group’s many achievements include two public showcases: Vers La Ville (2007) and Juxt-APosition (2008); guest performances such as the first Asian Youth Games Host City Contract Signing Ceremony (2008) and Singapore River Festival (2009). INDANCITY also represented Singapore at the World Dance Alliance Asia Pacific Dance Bridge (2007) and has been active at external and SMU events such as SMU Convocation and SMU’s CCA Day- ‘Vivace’.

INDANCITY’s repertory includes works by professional choreographers such as Dr Stephanie Burrigde (Former Artistic Director of Canberra Dance Company); Albert Tiong (Former Dancer of Cloudgate Dance Theatre); Ryan Tan (Creative Director O School); Jeffrey Tan (Former Resident Choreographer of Singapore Dance Theatre). The group has also created many platforms for its very own budding young choreographers.

As SMU’s only contemporary dance group, it celebrates achievement of three historical group milestones: its first major production, first public regional competition and first overseas international competition. In January 2009, under the direction of its Resident Choreographer, Dan Kwoh, INDANCITY presented its first inaugural production, Beyond. It was performed to a sell-out audience for two nights at Victoria Theatre.

In its first competition at the CSTD 10th Asia-Pacific Dance Competition (2008), the group achieved the Champion’s title under the Modern Group Open Category. Taking its goals into the international arena, the group participated in the New Prague Dance Festival Competition (2009), and came in 1st in the Contemporary and Modern Dance category amidst the fierce competition from many international dance groups.

INDANCITY is grateful for your continued support as the group challenges itself towards higher levels of excellence in contemporary dance and towards expanding its reach to inspire more dancers and non-dancers alike.
